The basics

What is a multipurpose recreation building?

A multipurpose recreation building is one barn planned for several uses at once: sport, entertaining, work and hobbies. Instead of separate outbuildings, you get one well-built structure with zones laid out so everything works together.

We call it the all-of-the-above barn. A court for the kids, an office for you and a craft room or guest suite, all under one roof. Our 30+ years building custom and luxury homes means we plan structure, systems and finishes for each zone, not just the shell.

How the zones fit

Loud and quiet spaces, wet and dry areas, and storage are placed so a game on the court doesn't spill into the office. Lofts and mezzanines add space above for storage or a hangout.

Who builds one?

Families who want one place for everything, landowners adding a party barn to their property, and anyone who'd rather build one great building than three small ones.

Popular multipurpose options

  • Court, cages or a golf simulator bay
  • Lounge, bar and big screen
  • Private offices or a conference room
  • Craft and gathering studio
  • Lofts and mezzanines
  • Bathroom, kitchenette and HVAC

Planning your barn

How we plan a multipurpose barn

Start with the structure, then add what you need for how you'll use it.

Size and span

Wide, open spans give each zone room to work and keep posts out of the way of a court or cage.

Zones and flow

We lay out where each use goes, how people move between them and where the doors, windows and restrooms land.

Lofts and mezzanines

Extra space above for storage, an office or a hangout that looks down on the court.

Porches and lean-tos

Covered space for gathering, parking or equipment along the outside of the barn.

Comfort systems

Insulation, HVAC, plumbing and power so every zone is usable year-round.

Build now or later

Finish every zone now, or plan the space and finish part of it later when you're ready.

FAQ

Multipurpose barn questions

  • Can one barn really handle sport, work and entertaining?

Yes, when it's planned that way from the start. We lay out zones, doors and systems so a court, an office and a lounge each work on their own and together.

  • Can I finish part of the barn later?

Yes. Build it in now, or plan the space and finish it later. Planning up front makes a later finish simpler.

  • What if I have a set budget?

Tell us your number and what you want the barn for. We'll recommend the barn size and options that give you the most for that range.

  • Can someone live in part of it?

Yes. We build barndominium-style living, from a guest suite to a full-time home. Living space comes with additional code and permit requirements, and we handle those for you.

  • Who does the work?

Our team manages every barn, working with trusted, insured trade partners on a set schedule. One project lead is your point of contact from start to finish.
