The basics

What is a custom recreational barn?

A custom recreational barn is a sturdy steel barn built on your property and finished for play: a basketball court, batting cages, a golf simulator, a home gym, a bar or a family hangout. It's one of the most popular residential outbuildings we build, because it puts game night and practice a short walk from the house.

Every Hardy Barn starts with the same dependable shell. Our team has spent more than 30 years building custom and luxury homes, so we can take the inside much further than a typical pole barn: real structural options, complete systems and finishes that look right.

Mix and match

Most owners don't pick just one thing. A half court with a shop, a simulator bay beside a batting cage, or a lounge with a big screen overlooking the court. We lay out the zones so everything works together under one roof.

Who builds one?

Families with young athletes, coaches who want a training space, and landowners who want the best gathering spot around. Many of our customers already own their land or have family land, and many pay cash or bring their own financing.

Popular recreational add-ons

  • Basketball and sport-court floors
  • Batting cages and pitching tunnels
  • Golf simulator bays
  • Turf areas, home gym and training space
  • Bar, kitchenette and game-day bathroom
  • Insulation, HVAC and power for year-round use

Planning your barn

What shapes a great recreational barn

A few early decisions make the difference between a big shed and a space your family actually uses every week.

Open span

Wide, open spans keep posts out of the way of a court, a cage or a simulator screen, so every zone can be used at full size.

Ceiling height

Taller sidewalls leave room for a hoop, the arc of a batted ball, a golf swing or a loft above the lounge.

Zones that work together

We plan where the court, cage, simulator, bar and storage go, including doors, sight lines and how people move between them.

Comfort systems

Insulation, HVAC, plumbing and power let you use the barn in an Indiana January and a July afternoon.

Finishes that last

Sport floors, turf, wall padding and lighting chosen for hard use, with the same eye for finishes we bring to custom homes.

Built on your land

We check the site, access, utilities and permits, then place the barn so it's easy to reach from the house and the drive.

FAQ

Recreational barn questions

  • What can I put in a recreational barn?

Almost anything. Popular choices are a basketball or sport court, batting cages, a golf simulator, a home gym, a bar, a lounge with a big screen and a game-day bathroom. Many owners combine several under one roof.

  • Do I need to own land already?

Not yet. We build on land you or your family own, so the barn goes up once the land is in place. If you're still looking, tell us on the form and we'll connect you with local land and lot resources.

  • What if I have a set budget?

That's fine. Tell us your number and how you want to use the barn. We'll recommend the barn size and options that fit that range best, and we'll be upfront about what's possible.

  • How long does a recreational barn take?

Shell-only barns are usually done about 14 weeks after first contact. Finished interiors take longer, depending on the add-ons you choose. Your contract includes your schedule.

  • Can I make changes once the build starts?

That's what selections are for. Once you sign off, the plan is locked so we can keep your price and schedule. We only adjust for things outside anyone's control, and any adjustment is handled in writing.
